Description

HIFA is a 6-day annual festival and workshop programme that showcases the very best of local, regional and international arts and culture in a comprehensive festival programme of theatre, dance, music, circus, street performance, spoken word, visual arts.

HIFA has come to be seen as an important symbol of something positive about Zimbabwe, unifying socially and culturally disparate groups of Zimbabweans at a time of ideological conflict and political uncertainty bringing huge audiences together to celebrate something positive – the healing and constructive capacity of the arts.

HIFA 2014 will be the 15th edition of the Festival. Since its inception in 1999, the Festival has received recognition for its support of arts and culture in Zimbabwe and is seen as a major contributor to development in this area. HIFA is now the largest cultural event in Zimbabwe, among the eight major festivals in Africa and a significant player on the international Arts and Culture circuit.

TIPS FROM A FESTIVAL GURU

NO READMITTANCE
Don’t forget that if you leave a venue during a performance you will not be re-admitted until the show is finished. This applies to all venues including Telecel Main Stage.

EARLY BIRDS
Book in advance for the shows you want to see. Popular artists will sell out! Use the programme, the website and the facebook page to work out the schedule of shows you want to see well in advance, then GO AND BUY YOUR TICKETS!

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE
Shows at HIFA start on time, so be punctual to avoid being turned away! Arrive ahead of the pack, as stragglers will not be admitted once shows have begun. Remember that HIFA doesn’t do refunds, so give yourself enough time to experience the acts you want to see or hear.

SHHHHHH!!!
Audiences are there to hear the music, not a chorus of ringtones, so make sure your cell phones are switched off! At the indoor shows, stay in your seats and keep quiet.

BE WARM
The evening shows at Telecel Main Stage, Lay’s Global Stage and Coca-Cola Green can get a bit chilly, so dress warmly! It is late autumn/early winter in Zimbabwe and so cool evenings, possible rain and cold winds are expected.

ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY?
Feel free to bring along chairs and picnic blankets to appropriate Telecel Main Stage shows. To avoid confusion and sightline problems, those with chairs must find a spot on the right side of the grass arena facing the stage, whilst their lower lying, picnicking companions sitting on the grass should keep to the left of the arena. Be warned that some shows will attract large standing audiences so leave chairs, picnics and blankets at home and feast on the atmosphere instead.
