Kidzcan is the only organization in Zimbabwe dedicated to increasing the survival rate of children with cancer.
Initially, Kidzcan’s founder, Andrea Whatman ( herself a survivor of childhood cancer ) aimed to provide hope, comfort and consolation to the families and children suffering from cancer through a simple volunteer programme, but she very quickly came to realize the overwhelming need to support diagnosis and treatment.
With chemotherapy drugs unavailable and tests for diagnosis beyond the financial reach of most families in Zimbabwe, something needed to be done. Thus, Kidzcan, Children’s Cancer Relief, a Zimbabwean Private Voluntary Organization (PVO) was established.
Kidzcan supports the Ministry of Health and Child Care by providing the following essential and lifesaving services:
Funding for diagnostic testing and laboratory tests
Sourcing, purchasing and distributing critically needed oncology medication
Supplementary feeding programmes for cancer patients via provision of nutritional supplements for children in particular need.
Transport assistance for crucial follow-up appointments for parents in need of this support.
Compliance sessions with parents to ensure they bring their children back for all their treatment sessions required successful treatment
Supporting parents of cancer patients through support group meetings, facilitation of services for their children and where required additional material support (blankets, food etc)
Playtime for children restricted to the hospital through our ward volunteer programme.
Early detection through national awareness and sensitization campaigns
In addition to providing practical and emotional support to families with children with cancer, Kidzcan works in collaboration with clinicians in what is presently the only pediatric oncology ward in the nation - housed at Parirenyatwa Group of
Hospitals in Harare.
Kidzcan has established working relationships with doctors, nurses and other health professionals. We support the work they are doing in pediatric oncology. We also work with the community of traditional medical practitioners and the Hospice Association of Zimbabwe.
Pediatric cancers are largely curable if detected, diagnosed and treated early, however, children were presenting at Parirenyatwa in the late stages of cancer. Thus In 2009, Kidzcan initiated (and today continues to carry out) a campaign to educate the wider community about the early signs and symptoms of childhood cancer. This is making an impact.
Kidzcan believes that children with cancer can survive, and that there is a future!
